The film tells the story about the meeting between Lazaro, a young peasant with a kind heart who is often mistaken for a fool, and Tancredi, a young nobleman with an insanely rich imagination. Life in their isolated town of Inviolata is subject to the terrible Marquise Alfonsina de Luna, the Cigarette Queen. When Tancredi asks Lazzaro for help in organizing his own kidnapping, a strong bond develops between the two.
