The elderly American reporter George Smith nostalgically goes back to his memories from the distant 1944 at the end of World War II when he was sent by his newspaper to take interview with prominent Bulgarian banker Atanas Burov. George was secretly transferred to Bulgaria through Serbia. The young American finds it hard to navigate the dramatic events unfolding in the Balkans at the time. He risks his own survival as he falls in love with the banker's young secretary, Maria, who in turn is desperately in love with her boss.
